It has been said that there are approximately 800 species of gecko in the world. This large specie can be divided into four sub categories which include the following:
1. sphaerodactylinae
2. Eublepharinae
3. Diplodactylinae
4. Gekkoninae - which is dubbed to be the largest among the subcategories with over 550 species from all around the world
Fortunately, geckos are adaptable in their habitat and are found quite widespread as well as posing no threat to human beings. Warmer climates are their natural habitat.
Once you have seen a gecko you will strongly relate it to lizards. The main difference with the lizard is the means of communication with each other. A loud chirping sound is made by geckos to interact with each other. They also do not have eyelids when compared to lizards. Transparent membranes cover the eyes of geckos and they lick it with their tongue to clean it.
Gecko owners should have several considerations when caring for their pets. Life in the wild is often full of dangers for them due to the large number of predators feeding on it. Large lizards and birds as well as snakes feed on geckos. Territorial disputes are the main reason why geckos suffer from wounds brought about by another gecko wishing to invade a territory. Here are 7 tips to ponder on how to care for your gecko at home:
Tip#1: Geckos love to eat crickets and they are considered to be an excellent source of their diet. Never feed your gecko with a cricket which is too large compared to the gecko's head. Before feeding the crickets to your geckos you can gut load it by feed those crickets with tropical fish flakes, dried dog food and even fruit and vegetable slices. In this way, you can provide your gecko the nutrients it needs.
Tip#2: When feeding your gecko you should determine the ample amount appropriate to the size and age of your gecko. 15-20 minutes should be enough time to feed your gecko with crickets. Never allow crickets to roam around the cage because these can disturb your gecko from sleeping.
Tip#3: Mealworms are another food item by which geckos feed well. Feed your gecko with mealworms on a once a week frequency. Please snip off the head of the mealworm before feeding it to your gecko.
Tip#4: Baby geckos should be given different food to sustain the needs of nutrient to support growth. Fruit flies are the best option to feed these baby geckos.
Tip#5: Wax worms can be given to your gecko as a treat. Avoid giving it as a part of the main diet. It is very important that you should monitor how much your geckos are eating or if they are getting enough food.
Tip#6: An adult can feed on a one day old mouse. This can be a perfect source of protein for your growing gecko.
Tip#7: Gecko pet owners can use supplement food from pet stores. This can ensure they get the nutrients and minerals not included in the main diet of your pet. Keep in mind that you do not depend on supplements for your geckos because they cannot provide all the needed nutrients to support growth of your pet.
