Diet and Masculinity - The Way to a Man's Stomach is Through His Biceps!

Diet and Masculinity - The Way to a Man's Stomach is Through His Biceps!

Due to the health risks of a bad diet, men are increasingly beginning to focus on their motivation to change the way they eat and of course the way they look.

Dietitian and exercise physiologist Samantha Heller believes: "males of all ages are being affected by our highly body-conscious culture now... body dysmorphia, an unhealthy view of the body, is also increasing in men as well as women".

Dr Samantha Heller describes how men's health issues manifest differently from women's health concerns, where she states: "They tend to work out a lot more, and many turn to anabolic steroids or fat burners to assist in achieving their desired body type. But whether it's for vanity, self esteem, to increase confidence or if your suffering from obesity, more and more men are dieting than ever before".

Venturing into territory traditionally reserved for women, this generational change in mindset is refreshing, although men don't look at it from the dieting sense, as they tend to couch their involvement differently.

The terms "dieting" and "slim" don't resonate well amongst men. A man's goal when they want to lose weight is to feel stronger and more masculine. The term dieting not only implies femininity but initiates the feeling that they will lose muscle mass in the process.

Dr Samantha Heller argues that that's fine with her. "I don't either, to me dieting implies a beginning and an end, as opposed to the full lifestyle change that men and women need to be successful here."

So what ideas do put men in front of healthier dishes?

Visions of brawniness Dr Heller argues. Heller, and the multi-billion-dollar dietary supplement weight loss industry attest, it's an interest in stamina, bodybuilding and other hallmarks of masculinity that really get guys to be food-conscious.

If the way to a man's heart they say is through his stomach, then the way to his stomach is apparently through his biceps.
