Questions Concerning Dog Epilepsy and Shedding

Questions Concerning Dog Epilepsy and Shedding

I have a pet dog which is a female Terrier whose age is about five years. Once every few months she appears to have a seizure. I take her in my car to the doctor's clinic immediately after the occurrence of this episode and it takes 20 minutes to reach the doctor's clinic. The dog recovers within this 20 minute drive and acts normal when the vet examines her. Hence, it was not possible for my veterinarian to solve this problem since he is unable to see the exact symptoms of seizure. I shall be thankful if you can let me know the reason for having such an attack and also the method to help her.

Answer 1 - There could be several causes of your dog seizures, Epilepsy being the main one. More and more epilepsy cases are being reported in dogs; all breeds including the terrier are susceptible for this. These fits come all of a sudden and the dog goes into convulsions which frightens both the dog and the owner.

Reasons for getting fits can be because of worms, toxins, parasites, epilepsy etc. Once the dog gains consciousness it trembles for about five to ten minutes before the dog becomes normal again. In order to control the dog's epileptic fits you should use the same drugs which are commonly used for human epilepsy. These dogs live normal lives when this condition is treated.

You should look for an experienced veterinarian with the ability and confidence in looking deeply into your dog's problem thereby arriving at a proper diagnosis and also the right type of treatment to be given.

Question 2 - Shedding Pug

We own a six month put which sheds terribly. I would like to know whether this breed is normal for this breed or is there a problem which is causing this shedding. We have followed the diet prescribed by our veterinarian and fed the dog accordingly for a period of 6 months; however there has been no improvement in the amount of hair shed. Is there anything wrong in the diagnosis of our vet?

Answer 2 - This problem can occur if the fat in the dog's diet is either excess or deficient. You should add fat as supplement in case you are not adding fat at present. 1 teaspoon of corn oil added to his food on alternate days could help. It will likely be around two weeks before you see the results of adding corn oil to your dog's diet.

If you are already adding corn oil to your dog's diet then try dropping from your dog's diet for a few weeks. Most of the breeds usually shed two times in a year. All breeds are prone to shedding equally, without any difference between breeds. If you add yellow yolk daily in the dog's diet profuse shedding occurs. Many people add egg yolk to their dog's diet under the assumption that their dog's coat will shine due to this.
