Low carb, high protein diets have gained in popularity in recent years and are being promoted as the best way to lose weight. People who follow these plans will get up to 50% of their calories from protein. On popular example of a low carb, high protein diet is the Atkins Diet. While lots of people report good results with these kind of diets, they are quite controversial. Some nutrition experts say that high protein diets can be harmful to the body.

While the advantages of inducing this state for weight loss seem clear, there are also some risks associated with it. Some studies have shown that ketosis may cause kidney failure in some people.

Still, these kinds of diets are popular for a reason: they work. Millions of people have had great results with low card diets like the Atkins Diet. Some of the newer low carb diets have been designed to allow a little more carbs as well as healthier foods. These changes make the diet healthier and easier to stick to.

Still, in the end the best way to lose weight and keep it off is not by going on a short term diet that may even be harmful. The key to long term weight loss success is learning healthy eating habits and exercising regularly.
