The number of people suffering from obesity and its related diseases has grown at an alarming rate, all over the world. People who have become aware of the health hazards of obesity work hard towards shedding those extra pounds. But a quick weight loss is not easy! It requires one to control diet and to exercise for months together before achieving success at it. Under circumstances when quick fat loss is important, using prescription diet pills is a good idea.
What are Prescription Pills?
Prescription diet pills are pills that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), USA. When used with a healthy diet and regular exercising program, these FDA approved pills can really assist in quick weight reduction; while some of these pills are to be used for a short term, others may have to be continued for a longer time. Primarily, there are three categories of such pills that have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of obesity. These include Sibutramine (Meridia), Orlistat (Xenical) and sympathomimetic appetite suppressants like Phentermine.
Phentermine
FDA approved Phentermine as a prescription appetite medication for short term treatment of obesity, way back in 1959. It was because of this approval that Phentermine Hydrochloride became widely available in the 1970s, all through the United States. Appetite suppressant medications like Phentermine help achieve weight loss by decreasing appetite. They increase secretion of brain chemicals that have a significant bearing on one's appetite.
With the passage of time, Phentermine has gained a lot of popularity among the masses. Available at affordable price, it has become one of the most preferred appetite suppressants in the market today.
Orlistat (Xenical)
Xenical was approved by the FDA a decade ago. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, Xenical is said to produce effective results towards the treatment of obesity. Xenical, like other diet pills, does not affect the brain chemistry of an individual for bringing desired results. It blocks about 30% of dietary fat from body absorption by congenially working with the gastrointestinal tract of the body of the patient. The unabsorbed fat is then removed in the stool.
Researchers also believe that other than blocking fat absorption, Xenical also supports fat loss by helping people avoid excessive fat consumption. However, there are some potential side effects of this diet pill such as frequent bowel movements, gas, oily stool, etc.
Sibutramine (Meridia)
Meridia works as an appetite suppressant and unlike other best diet pills, restrains the reuptake of neurotransmitters which leads to a decrease in appetite. Recently, there has been a lot of hue and cry over the use of Meridia and FDA has issued warnings regarding its use.
