Women - Weight Training and Bulking Up

Women - Weight Training and Bulking Up

If you are a women looking to lose weight - should you weight train? Are you afraid of bulking up? Have you ever been confused by different experts or friends on the best way to lose weight?

Have you ever taken advice from an "expert" just to hear from another expert that what the first one said was all wrong? I see it everyday! The confusion is enough to make many people just give up.

I recently watched a TV show about a severely overweight individual who was working with a trainer, dietitian, physician and other professionals to lose weight. She was already down over 100 pounds, but felt like she had reached a sticking point! Her doctor recommended she meet with a fitness "guru" from NY. This expert came in and contradicted everything that was being done and strongly advised her to quit weight training to avoid 'bulking up'!

He discussed the old, discredited myths that you'll look like a body builder if you lift weights and that she should only do cardio to lose weight. Because he was touted as the guru and he pushed the 'bulking up' concept so much, it created a difficult situation. Should she keep weight training as recommended by her current trainer who had used it to effectively help her shed 100 pounds of fat from her body with no bulking or follow the new guru's advice and toss it and stick strictly to cardiovascular exercise?

This is a very difficult decision - torn between experts. What is the 'lay person' to do?

You may be facing this situation right now or you may know someone who is. Even if you have only a couple pounds to lose, you may still be afraid to get on the weights for fear of the 'bulk'. I am here to tell you, after over 20 years of personal training, I can assure you, 'bulk' will not be a problem. Weight training builds muscle yes, but genetics determine the ability to build body building muscle - not exercises. A very small percentage of people have the genetic potential to build body building muscle, so don't be afraid of weight training, use it and lose fat and build body shaping muscle!

Get focused on a quality, regular exercise program and stick to it! I believe in you, you can do it!
