If you want to add a little boost to your health, consider making your own wine. It's inexpensive (as little as $1.00 US per bottle) and wine, especially red wine has very positive health benefits when is it consumed in moderation.
The key in the benefits of red wines is the Reservatol. Reservatol is actually a defensive mechanism that exists in plants to ward off pathogens and illness. However when fermented in wine, reservatol has numerous health benefits for humans.
Homemade Red Wine Can Help Extend Your Life
A clinical study conducted by Howitz and Sinclair in 2003 found that reservatol extended the life spans of yeast, worms and fruit flies. In 2007 the same study was reproduced by another group of researchers. Howitz and Sinclair did another study in which they fed 2 groups of mice a high fat diet and one group received reservatol. The mice fed reservatol had a 30% lower risk of death than the mice on the high fat diet alone.
Cancer Prevention Through Homemade Red Wine.
A very interesting study conducted in the late 1990's showed that when reservatol was applied to the skin as a topical aid that it would prevent the formation of skin cancer in mice that were directly injected with a carcinogen. To date, no human trials have been done regarding reservatol and skin cancer however these early studies look very promising.
Studies Indicate Homemade Red Wine May Fight Alzheimer's Disease
In late 2008, researchers at Cornell University reported their studies indicated that adding reservatol to the diets of their animal test subjects significantly reduced the amount of plaque formation which is the main contributor to Alzheimer's and other Neurodegenerative diseases.
Homemade wines don't have to just be made of grapes to be healthy. You can ferment almost any fruit. Along with Concord and red grapes which contain good amounts of reservatol, you can also use blueberries which contain roughly twice as much reservatol. Concord grape juice can also be used to create healthy homemade wines. Consider a grape/blueberry mixture and add in a touch of cranberry for urinary tract/bladder health when you start making homemade wines. The combinations are limitless.
Best of all, it's very economical to make your own homemade wines. There are only a few "must have" supplies and you can buy bottles in bulk at a good price from wholesalers or I've even found some good deals on Ebay. Give making your own homemade red wine a shot. If you're concerned about pesticides that may be fermented in with your favorite vintage - consider using organic grapes or organic juices and making your own. It's easy and very rewarding both to your bank account and your health.
