Detox Diet Plan For a Flatter Belly

Detox Diet Plan For a Flatter Belly

The detox diet plan will give you a head start on cleansing and make it easier for you to lose weight and flatten your belly. When your body has too much of the wrong food to process it holds onto fat simply because it is overwhelmed. The detox diet plan will provide relief and alleviate stress from the digestive system and liver.

24 hour fast

The best way to detox your body and flatten your belly is to start with a 24 hour fast. If you are taking prescription medications, please consult your doctor before starting this process. Choose a day when you do not have to perform a lot of physical activities. Weekends usually work well to start a detox diet plan.

During a fast, you will need to drink large quantities of water with fresh lemon juice to prevent yourself from getting dehydrated. Starting and ending the day with a glass of hot water and fresh lemon juice will help the detoxification process by cleansing the digestive system, liver and kidneys. Lemon and grapefruit juice are great fat burners.

Eat Raw Foods

After the initial 24 hour fast, the next step on the detox diet plan is to eat raw food for the rest of the week. This includes raw fruits and vegetables (in salads) since they are the easiest food for the body to digest. These foods provide the body with the most nutrition and also have a cleansing effect on the body. Raw foods will also help to speed up the body's metabolism and will help to strengthen the immune system. The high fiber content in vegetables and fruit is an excellent source for helping to flush toxins out of the body.

After week one, begin to cook your vegetables. Try to use organic fruit and vegetables. The best way to cook your veggies is to steam, bake or grill to prevent the loss of many important vitamins and minerals. Try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Fresh herbs are great way to add flavor to your vegetables.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Don't be surprised if you seem to feel worse for the first few days. Stick to the detox diet plan and you will soon start to feel better. This often happens because you are eliminating foods that you have become dependent on. Withdrawals can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, aches and pains and even flu like symptoms. These symptoms will pass, do not panic, it just means that your detox is working and you are on the way to a flatter belly!

Throughout your detox program, drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Walking for 15 to 30 minutes every day will also help you to detox your body. Drink two cups of either carrot or apple juice each day, great for the liver! Eat as much fruits and vegetables as you like and include spinach, broccoli, asparagus and sweet potato. If you use this plan to detox your body, you will see an amazing improvement in your overall health and a flatter belly!

Follow these ultimate secrets and life changing tips to aid you in your detox diet plan and achieve a flatter belly.

The Best Diets for Long-Term Weight Loss - Losing Weight and Keeping It Off

The Best Diets for Long-Term Weight Loss - Losing Weight and Keeping It Off

Most diet plans you seem to promise a quick and easy fix. Lose 10 pounds in a week! However, these plans are not diets for long-term weight loss. If you want to lose the weight and keep it off, you need a sensible alternative.

Now, the diet is only one part of a plan for losing weight permanently. You do need to include exercise. The government currently recommends you work out an hour a day, six days a week. Half of that should be weight training, while the other half should be aerobic exercise. Weight training will help you build muscle, which causes you to burn fat all the time. Aerobics will help you lose weight right away.

For the diet plan, you want to stick to a well-balanced diet. This means eating something from every food group every day. Don't follow the plans that cut out certain food groups entirely. For example, the Atkins plan cuts out carbs. It works in the short term, but in the long-term people end up gaining extra weight on this diet. They also drop their metabolism, which makes it harder to lose weight in the future.

Instead, eat a little of everything. This includes healthy fats. If you are creating a certain food, eat a small amount of it. Just don't go overboard.

The main factor in the best diets for long-term weight loss is your daily number of calories. You do not want to drop this below 1200. This causes your metabolism to fall, which makes it harder to lose weight. To find out the proper number of calories for you to eat to lose weight, you'll want to consult a calorie chart.

One of the best ways to lose weight with your diet is through calorie shifting. This means you eat a different number of calories on different days. For example, you would eat 1200 calories on Monday, 1600 on Tuesday, and 1300 on Wednesday. Each day has a different number. This keeps your body from going into starvation mode, which allows your metabolism to stay at a high level.

So what are the best diets for long-term weight loss? Stick with the healthy balanced ones. Don't go with the fads. You'll just end up hurting your metabolism and making it harder to lose weight.

Diets That Work - Beyond the Myths

Diets That Work - Beyond the Myths

Looking for easy diets includes all kinds of myths that aren't necessarily true. Some people assume that eating too much fat is the cause for them being overweight, but that is not entirely true. The body isn't picky about what it stores or turns to fat. This misconception causes many people to think that losing weight is as easy as limiting foods that contain fat or substituting low fat and fat free versions, instead. The problem is that they will often gain weight because they think they can eat more of these fat-free or low fat versions.

Myths Have Some Truth behind Them

In past years, many people heard about lowering body fat percentages, which is a good goal, but it isn't done by only limiting fats. Fat free or low fat foods can actually make you fatter if you eat too much of them, just like any other foods. This is because most people assume they can eat all they want of these foods. There are easy diets that do not require sacrifices, but this is not one of them.

There are two reasons for this fact: you can get fat from all kinds of foods and low fat and fat free foods have additives that might not be good for your health.

Many foods that have low fat or fat free on a label may mean that they have substituted other unhealthy things, like loads of sugar to add taste. There are other unhealthy ingredients, but the biggest problem is that many people think they can eat as much as they want of these products to lose weight.

Eating too much of any type of food will make you gain weight because your body will store any food that it doesn't burn off. You will see your body fat percentage go up if you eat more calories than your activity level warrants. Your body has no use for certain additives because there is no nutritional value, so they get stored, whether they come from fat free foods or other processed foods.

Body fat is an evolutionary reserve for energy that stems from times when feast or famine periods existed in caveman days. Your natural energy reserve results from eating more calories than you need, so the body stores them for times when a severe food shortage occurs. Your body will treat all calories the same, regardless of where they came from.

Easy Diets that Work

So, are there really any easy diets that do work? Of course, it would be nice if losing weight were as easy as eliminating fat or monitoring carbohydrates, but it doesn't work that way for your body. There are some easy diets out there that will not require impossible amounts of time and inhuman sacrifice on your part, but they focus a more on effective combination of foods rather than cutting out entire food groups.

The reason for this is logical, if you think about it. Once your body has all the nutrients it needs and your hunger hormones are satisfied, it is going to store any excesses, no matter what kinds of food they are, because your body sees all food equally as energy, unlike what you might see it as. Combining foods you love in portions that provide the energy your body needs without storing additional fat, is one of the easy diets to help you lose weight.

Common Dog Diseases and Parasites

Common Dog Diseases and Parasites

A good diet and plenty of exercise are important to a dog's health, but they can't make a dog totally immune to illness. Early detection is the key to helping your dog overcome any health problem. If your pet's stools become very loose, or you notice a marked decrease in your dog's appetite and/or that she is very lethargic, she may just have a short-term "bug." On the other hand, if any symptoms continue for more than a few days, you should have your veterinarian examine her for parasites and infections.

Diarrhea is a common symptom in dogs, especially puppies. It can be triggered by stress or a sudden change in food, but also by a virus, bacteria or parasites. Diarrhea causes dehydration, which can be deadly to dogs. It is extremely dangerous in puppies, because they dehydrate faster than mature dogs.

If your dog has diarrhea for more than a day, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. You will probably be asked to collect a sample and bring it in so they can examine it to determine the cause and proper treatment.

Coughing, sneezing, and discharge from your dog's nose and/or eyes often indicate a respiratory infection. A lethargic dog with no appetite is likely fighting an Upper Respiratory Infection (URI). URI, caused by airborne viruses and bacteria, is highly contagious among dogs, but is not transmitted between dogs and humans. Early detection of URI is important; ignored dogs suffer from severe dehydration and risk developing pneumonia.

Bortadella, also called 'kennel cough" is another contagious respiratory disease commonly contracted in animal shelters, boarding kennels, or anywhere groups of dogs have close contact with one another. It is a short-term disease, and most dogs get over it with a few days of rest and tender loving care from you. It is possible to have your dog vaccinated against Bortadella - a good idea if you plan on boarding her or placing her in "doggie daycare."

Vaccinations are also available to protect your dog against more deadly diseases such as rabies, distemper and parvovirus. Most municipalities require that all dogs are vaccinated against rabies; some include distemper and parvovirus as well. Making these vaccinations mandatory protects the health of all dogs, and, in the case of rabies, human health as well. If your dog was vaccinated as a puppy, she's off to a good start. However, without yearly booster shots, your dog is at risk of great suffering from one of these diseases.

Dogs serve as hosts to a number of parasites. You will probably be asked to bring a fecal sample to your dog's yearly vet appointment, so that the staff can check for the presence of internal parasites. If you notice small, rice-like granules on your pet's bedding or around her anus, she is suffering from an infestation of worms and needs to be seen by your vet to get proper treatment. Other parasites take up residence on the outside of your dog's body. Mange and sarcoptic mites live on the hair follicles and skin of dogs, while ear mites live on the inside of the ear. These parasites are so small you might not see them, but they cause your dog extreme discomfort. Head shaking and pawing at ears are signs of ear mites. Frequent scratching and skin-biting can indicate either skin mites or a dog's worst enemy: fleas.

Get Rid Of Parasites - Homemade Solutions

Get Rid Of Parasites - Homemade Solutions

Human parasites are becoming more common as compared to olden days. This could be due to many reasons ranging from unhealthy dietary habits to unhealthy living conditions. Whatever the cause parasite infestation has occurred in the body, once they attack intestines, they rest there and feed themselves with the foods and blood intestines have. At first sight, parasite infestations may not harm the body but over the times, they can bring many health ailments and can even damage intestines. In some bad cases, they travel in the body to many other sites and damage those particular organs.

Fortunately, there are many remedies that help getting rid of parasites from the body. Some of the homemade solutions are very effective and one should go for it since they produce favorable effects without harming the body in any other way.

Black walnut oil is considered to be good remedy to get rid of parasites. 1-2 drops of black walnut oil is to be put into the glass of water. One should have this water twice a day and this is sufficient to terminate the growth of the parasites and their eggs from the intestines. This is because the oil creates uncomfortable zone for parasites into the intestines and they leave it by getting excreted with feces.

Another proven homemade solution to get rid of parasite is having pumpkin seeds and onions mixed with soymilk. It is very good remedy for almost all type of parasite infestations in the human intestines. Cloves, goldenrod and goldenseal roots are also few of the most effective homemade solution to get rid of parasites from the human intestines. They all possess natural anthelminthic properties and hence help killing parasites and their eggs. Some of the naturopaths suggest taking bitter melon; either raw or in salads. This is very good and safe homemade remedy for treating parasite infestation.

Pineapple is another effective agent that parasites do not like! One can eat raw pineapple for 3 days to get rid of parasite infestations in the intestines. Many health experts suggest taking Vitamin E supplements that can help eliminating parasites and their eggs up to certain extent. Some of the ancient Asian herbs such as Terminalia bellirica, Butea monosperma, Neem and Turmeric are considered to be very effective against parasite infestations in the intestines. One can take them as daily health supplements. They all are available either as single herb or as formula having blend of those herbs.

Ayurveda, an ancient herbal science of India describes giving enema and some herbal preparation containing Neem, Holy Basil, Turmeric, Ginger, Emblica ribes and Black pepper. This is time tested and trusted herbal remedy that can be prepared at home and can be taken in case of parasites infestation in the intestines.

Along with medications, one should avoid eating fermented foods, junk/canned/packed foods, foods with preservatives, refined floured or sugary foods and the food that is not fresh. They all are triggering factors for parasites in the intestines.

Do Vegetarians Need to Take Supplements As Part of a Diet?

Do Vegetarians Need to Take Supplements As Part of a Diet?

Supplements aren't ideal, but they may be worth considering if your circumstances are such that the benefits of taking a supplement outweigh the risks.

Though you can easily get enough iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin D, and zinc from plant foods, in some instances, a supplemental boost of one or more of these may be merited if you aren't getting enough from the foods you choose.

If you're healthy, your body should generally be able to adapt to varying dietary conditions, absorbing more of a particular nutrient when you need more and absorbing less when you need less. If you get enough calories to meet your energy needs and you eat a reasonable variety of wholesome foods but your diet alone isn't enough to keep nutrients at normal levels in your body, a more complicated problem is likely the culprit.

Another time when a nutritional supplement may be recommended is during pregnancy. I discuss the use of prenatal supplements in Chapter 19. Vegetarians aren't more likely than nonvegetarians to need prenatal supplements, but some people mistakenly think that women who don't eat meat when they're pregnant miss out on vital nutrients. This isn't so, but if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant, your healthcare provider may still recommend a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement.

The bottom line is that, with the exception of vitamin B12 for vegans, vegetarians aren't more prone than meat eaters to develop nutritional deficiencies. Vegetarians can generally get the nutrition they need from foods. They don't need supplements unless they have reason to believe that their intake isn't sufficient or that an underlying health problem is causing a nutrient imbalance.

Not all health professionals are equally familiar with vegetarianism and qualified to counsel vegetarians about their diets. If you do need help sorting out the pros and cons of vitamin and mineral supplementation, seek out a registered dietitian who's knowledgeable about vegetarian diets. A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met specific criteria for education and experience as set forth by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, has passed a national registration exam, and has completed continuing education requirements. Search online for a registered dietitian who practices in your geographic area and has expertise in vegetarian nutrition by going to the American Dietetic Association Web site

In addition, the National Academy of Sciences recommends that certain groups take supplements, whether they're vegetarian or not. Specifically, the academy recommends that all adults over the age of 50 take a vitamin B12 supplement to ensure that they're getting enough. The academy also recommends that women in their childbearing years take a folic acid supplement. Research suggests that folic acid supplementation may help prevent neural tube defects, and many women have difficulty reaching the recommended level of 400 micrograms of folic acid per day. Vegetarian women can take a bow, though: Their folic acid intakes are typically much higher than those of nonvegetarians.

The Best Weight Loss Program - Natural Cleansing or Weight Loss Supplements?

The Best Weight Loss Program - Natural Cleansing or Weight Loss Supplements?

People who have long been struggling with their weight are all probably asking the same questions:
What is the best weight loss program?

Do diet pills really work?

Should I take up surgery?

Is colon cleansing an effective weight loss strategy?

Are those natural weight loss supplements really effective?

Let's take it one item at a time.

What is the best weight loss program?

Sorry for being a spoilsport, but there's not one program that can be considered the "best" weight loss program. The effectiveness of a program depends on each individual's case - their lifestyle, health background, fitness level and a number of other factors. However, to help you choose the program that is "best" for you, ask yourself the following questions:

1. How much weight do I want to lose? - Before anything else, assess your current situation and decide how much weight you really want to lose.

2. Will the program require me to change my current lifestyle? - Some programs have their participants undergo counseling to teach them about making lifestyle changes to help them lose weight more effectively. Are you prepared to undergo these sessions?

3. Does the program require a certain food product for me to purchase? - Some of the more popular weight loss programs encourage patients to try a particular brand of food, usually manufactured by the program creators themselves.

4. How much will it cost me? - Many weight loss programs come with hefty price tags so you must assess first your financial situation before signing-up for any program.

Do diet pills work?

The short answer is yes. Some of these pills do work, but the better question to ask is "Do diet pills work for long?" Another good question to ask is "Are diet pills safe?" Unfortunately, most diet pills only offer short-term results, especially if the person who takes them relies only on them for weight loss. Doctors and fitness experts agree that for a diet pill to be truly effective, it must be combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Regarding safety, a few pills are indeed safe but they require a doctor's prescription while those sold over the counter usually are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Should I consider surgery?

Weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is recommended for people who are already in their obese stages (a Body Mass Index greater than 30). You must also be between age 18 to 60 to qualify for surgery.

Is colon cleansing an effective weight loss strategy?

Proponents of colon cleansing consider it a natural weight loss strategy that can effectively rid one's body of excess weight. Cleansing may be induced by supplements, pills or other methods. They believe that exercising a sick body may only further weaken the person, who simply doesn't have the energy to spare for it. The popularity of fast foods further weakens one's body by the buildup of toxins and cholesterol. In this program, a clean and efficient digestive system is the key to weight loss.

A few clinics specialize in colon cleansing, while some weight loss pills and natural supplements cleanse the body by getting rid of oils and toxins. However, diet supplements are not always effective, and some can even be harmful.

Are those natural weight loss supplements really effective?

Here's the hard truth: a lot of products advertised as natural weight loss supplements that supposedly help in cleansing your body are actually not approved for sale by the FDA. The FDA especially warns the public against products that claim to be natural and body cleansing weight loss supplements because many tests prove them ineffective. Plus, the public is also warned against purchasing products that contain the words "exotic", "ancient", "oriental" and other similar terms, because they are mostly found in fraudulent products.

The bottom line is that proper diet and regular exercise are still the best ways to lose weight and keep it off. Fad diets may work, but not for long. Healthy living is much more effective than any "natural" remedy, colon cleansing procedure or weight loss supplement. Ask your doctor or fitness trainer to help you in starting a safe and effective diet plan.

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, you have to see a doctor before keeping a diet or lose any weight. If you cannot eat tuna, you can replace it with any low-fat fish, but only stewed, cooked in the oven or grilled, and only in low quantities (100-150g).

You may always change the dinner with the lunch, if you think it will help you better. Also, you may alter any foods presented in the present diet, with a similar one, of your choice. A bowl of salad is about 250-300g. The recommended soup quantity is of your choice, but if it contains meat, this will be limited to 100g.

If you're lactose intolerant, you may replace it with yoghurt, drinking yoghurt or low fat cheese.

If you cannot eat fruit, you may replace them with natural juice. Since for a glass of juice, you need many fruits, you may dilute the juice with water.

Sushi, Sashimi and Worms, Oh My!

Sushi, Sashimi and Worms, Oh My!

What was once a trendy food a short time ago is now very mainstream. In restaurants in cities all over America, sushi and its cousin sashimi can be found in Chinese buffets and Japanese sushi bars everywhere. You can even find it in your local supermarket.

The raw seafood used in these foods may contain parasitic worms that can cause relatively mild to severe infections in humans. Anisakis simplex is the most likely offender when it comes to parasitic infections from these now common foods.

Anisakis is a marine roundworm that can be found in over 200 species of fish, eel and octopus. When you eat raw seafood contaminated with this roundworm, you are ingesting live larval forms of the parasite.

From as soon as 1 hour to 2 weeks after eating the sushi, the symptoms may begin. The worms typically attached themselves to the stomach where vomiting and abdominal pain will ensue. More severe symptoms may be abdominal pains resembling appendicitis and rarely bowel obstructions.. Typically in this country people discover they have this parasite when they feel a tickling sensation in the throat and actually cough up the worm.

This parasite rarely achieves maturity in the human host and eventually dies in a few weeks. The dead worms however stimulate an inflammatory response which can cause allergic type symptoms.

There is no antibiotic or other pill to take for treating Anisakis. Removing the worm surgically may be the only way to alleviate pain in very severe cases.

The good news is that this food borne illness is quite rare in the United States with only approximately 10 cases reported annually, though it is speculated that many mild cases are not reported.

How do you prevent getting this potentially painful parasite? The Food and Drug Administration recommends that all seafood intended for raw consumption be either blast frozen (-35ºC) for at least 15 hours or regularly frozen for 7 days which will kill the parasite. Go to reputable restaurants that surely follow these health and safety guidelines. Don't prepare your own sushi from fish you caught yourself.

This disease should be considered if you've had recently eaten sushi or sashimi and have symptoms of an allergic reaction with abdominal pain.

As more and more people patronize restaurants that serve sushi, it is expected that the levels of Anisakiasis will increase in this country.

Can Low Fat Diets Cause Depression And Irritability?

Can Low Fat Diets Cause Depression And Irritability?

Ever wonder why you or those around you get grumpy and depressed while dieting?

Besides feeling hungry and deprived, getting too little healthy fat may contribute to low serotonin in your brain.

The Study

A study comparing a 41 percent fat diet with a 25 percent fat diet found that subjects moods deteriorated right along with reduced fat intake.

Anger and negativity are symptoms of serotonin depletion, both emotions increase on lowfat diets.

Why is this?

In the central nervous system, serotonin plays an important role as a neurotransmitter in the modulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, human sexuality, appetite and metabolism.

Fat where you need it

About two-thirds of your brain is composed of fats your brain cells require very specialized fats - the same ones that built the brains of your prehistoric ancestors and enabled them to learn and evolve at such a fast rate. These same fats are even now being incorporated into the very structure of your brain, according to the Franklin Institute on Brain Research.

Increasing fat intake increases the availability of tryptophan in the brain an essential amino acid to produce serotonin, according to Julia Ross M. A. author of the "Mood Cure and the Diet Cure".

Shrinkage in the wrong place

By cutting out fats, rather than starving and shrinking your body, you are actually starving and shrinking your brain and since your brain is two-thirds fat, it needs a proper balance of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) to thrive and survive.

Though your body does naturally produce many things on it's own the one thing it cannot produce is EFA's, that's why this fat is called "essential" because without it, it's difficult to think, thrive and be emotionally stable.

Fatty Functions

Along with producing tryptophan, fatty acids synthesize hormones called prostaglandins, which affect everything from inflammation, blood pressure, blood clotting and other functions of the circulatory system. Certain hormones made from omega 6 fatty acids increase these conditions and those made from omega 3 fatty acids reduce them. A good balance between these two types of fats helps regulate body functions, ensure happy moods and good health.

Beware the bad fats

Just because your brain and body needs fat does not mean to go out and eat a juicy burger and large fries. It's true Americans are consuming too much fat, but it's the WRONG kind of fat and it's important to have a sufficient amount of the RIGHT kinds of fat in your diet, meaning the beneficial high quality oils, they are the building blocks of hormones and vital in the development of your nervous system to keep you happy, healthy and sane.

Best Natural Parasite Cleanse - Parasites Removal and Treatment

Best Natural Parasite Cleanse - Parasites Removal and Treatment

Parasites can be extremely dangerous when they get inside your body and start laying eggs. Parasites removal and treatment can be accomplished quite effectively using natural supplements and herbal cleansing products, but there are so many natural parasite cleansers on the market that it can be hard to know which ones actually work, and which ones are the most effective. This article reviews what should constitute and what you should expect to find in the best natural parasite cleanse.

Firstly, it is important to note that most parasites make their home in the intestinal tract, and so any good natural or herbal parasite cleanse must target the intestines.

Also remember that colon cleansers or a natural parasite cleanse is only a part of the solution. To prevent parasite infections you must also make an effort to change your lifestyle for a healthier and stronger future. Incorporating healthy bacteria such as probiotics into your diet can keep your colon healthier, stronger and can aid in a faster recovery from the damage internal parasites may have caused.

If you have been infected with parasites then you should try to think back and trace your steps to determine where you most likely were infected and take the necessary precautions to prevent making the same mistakes in the future. For example, if you ate sushi or undercooked foods recently, or if you didn't properly wash hands before eating recently, even running around barefoot, all of these are high risk parasite attack activities that should be minimized.

When it comes to parasites removal and treatments, remember to drink lots of water during the cleansing procedure. Additionally, always keep in mind that the best natural parasite cleanse and detox program should remove the parasites and worms in your colon before killing them, because if the parasites are killed in your colon, then they release a large amount of toxins and chemicals into your body that will stay there.

Simple Exercise Routines That Burn Calories

Simple Exercise Routines That Burn Calories

A few short ten minute exercises can help you burn calories, and you usually don't need any special equipment other than supportive shoes. Any dietitian or health consultant will tell you dieting isn't going to do very much to help you lose weight if you don't also exercise.

Eating a balanced healthy diet is a great start, and for most people saying no to that extra cookie or fizzy drink is easy, but what if you struggle? Well, ten minutes of exercise can burn 35 calories, and over a day, several short exercise sessions could be all you need to burn 200-400 calories over and above your normal activity.

Most government health departments and doctors recommend 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day, this doesn't mean you need to join the gym or even take up sport, in fact the best way to get the most from exercise is to enjoy your exercise, if that means walking around your neighborhood or using a treadmill in your bedroom, then go to it - your health is more important than fashion.

Going for a brisk walk is one of the easiest exercises you can do, simply walk out the front door and go around the block a couple of times, or go to your local park or high school track and walk around the perimeter. 10 minutes of brisk walking burns 35 calories, do that three times per day and there's over 100 calories right there. If the stairs seem a daunting project, don't give up, join a dance group or turn on some music and dance for 10 minutes in your living room. It's fun and burns 65 calories, and did I mention it's fun! Dancing has the extra benefit in releasing lots of endorphins which make you feel great and give you a positive vibe for hours after.

However if you're really serious about burning calories during your ten minute exercise, use a treadmill will watching TV, or before you have your morning shower. an incredible 97 calories will be burned from ten minutes on a treadmill. Acne Related Good and Bad Diets

Acne Related Good and Bad Diets

One of the oldest popular believes about acne is its link with diet. The role of diet in acne was a proven fact in old ages. However with modern advancements in scientific researches the accountability of diet has become controversial. There are certain dermatologists how totally liberate diet from this blame while most believe that diet does have a role at least in acne flare ups, if not in formation of new lesions. There are two aspects of diet in this regard;

  • 1. Some bad foods that cause or exacerbate acne
  • 2. Some good foods that prevent or help to clear acne.
Acne Related Bad Foods:

As long as acne flare ups are concerned, the notorious of all foods are chocolates, soft drinks, potato chips, spicy foods, shell fish and so forth. As acne is predominantly a disease of teenagers, (although women in 20s or 30s may also be affected) the age when such foods are the favorites. While parents usually hate to see kids filling their stomachs with such junk foods mainly because these diets are glaringly deficient in several vital minerals and vitamins. Consequently it is the desire of parents for a dermatologist to declare such sugary and oily foods to be the main culprit. Beside junk foods there are some acne sufferers who found that spicy foods or beef are the ones that worsen their pimples. In contrast to above you may come across few researchers that claim milk to be the main cause in some people. Eggs are another infamous food for acne. Similarly there are many other believes regarding the link of food and acne. Above all there are different effects of same food on different people.

Quite opposite to the strong traditional belief that wrong diets cause or worsen acne, Scientists have not found any connection between specific foods and acne. The Journal of the American Medical Association recognized, "Diet plays no role in acne treatment in most patients...even large amounts of certain foods have not clinically exacerbated acne." There has been found no direct influence of food to the cause of acne. Still we will recommend unhealthy junk and spicy foods to be avoided at least during the course of treatment because they will drop off the intake of healthy foods that promote rapid healing.

Acne Related Good Foods:

Even though certain foods do not cause acne or aggravate existing acne lesions, a good healthy diet does have a role in clearing skin. A healthy food promotes an overall good health, and as skin is the reflection of one's well being, a good health will reflect a fresh glowing complexion with clear skin. There are certain Vitamins and minerals that are very essential for a healthy skin. The most important of all are;

  • Vitamin A; major sources are liver, fish oil, carrots, apricot, parsley, spinach, tomatoes, milk, cheese and whole eggs.
  • Vitamin E; major sources are nuts like almonds and peanuts, whole grain, vegetable oils, avocado, green leafy vegetables especially kale.
  • Zinc; Major sources are Lean meat, skinless chicken, Shellfish, Nuts, Seeds, whole grain Cereals, Yogurt, skim milk, eggs, whole grains, mushroom.
  • Vitamin B and Chromium have also been found useful in clearing skin and getting a glowing complexion.

The important factor for getting a clear acne free face is to avoid bad foods as much as possible, to add good foods to your diet and drink plenty of water. Though the part of water for clearing acne was well known in the near past, yet new researches have made this controversial too. Still its role in maintaining body's well being is incredible and as already mentioned a good health means good skin.

Six Pack Abs Diet Plan for Men

Six Pack Abs Diet Plan for Men

Did you know that you all ready have six pack abs? Everybody does, in point of fact. The difference between you and the guy on the beach with the stomach that looks like a washboard might not necessarily be the amount of exercise you do, although exercise does play a huge role in getting a six pack. What makes a critical difference on whether you're showing a six pack or simply one huge single pack is in your diet.

Men hear the word diet and the first thing that comes to mind is all the fussy 'chick' food that dieting seems to entail. While you could go that route, and lose weight, there are ways to get a solid six pack abs diet going without having to live on salad and tuna fish.

Diet is a matter of putting the correct amount of calories into your system at the correct times of day. It really is that simple. Getting there will take a little bit of preparation, and will include a green salad, or so, but you can eat real food and still lose the extra weight that is hiding your six pack.

Overall, men's caloric needs are vastly different from women's- men burn calories faster due to overall differences in metabolism and size. A normal diet to maintain weight can range from 2000 calories for a sedentary older man to 2400 calories per day for an active man 18-33. To lose a pound of fat, you simply need to decrease overall consumption by 3500 calories. For an active man 18-33 years old, this means reducing caloric intake to between 1800-2000 calories per day and using a combination of strength training and aerobic training. According to all legitimate sources, you should never go below 1500 calories/day as this will lead to your body going into starvation mode-it is extremely unhealthy and you will lose muscle instead of fat.

So, how exactly should you eat? It's simple Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus two snacks-one mid morning between breakfast and lunch, and another part way through the afternoon, before dinner, is usually the best route to go. Your meals should be protein-rich and loaded with complex carbs. For protein, all meats and seafood are fine as long as they are lean and not fried. Complex carbs include green salads, fresh veggies and fresh fruits. You should try to stay away from white potatoes (sweet potato is fine), pasta, corn (a starch-NOT a veggie) bread, and the like. Occasional treats along these lines are fine after you've reached your target, but for the most part, you should avoid them while trying to lose weight. If you work out daily, you could add an occasional extra meal of protein and carbs for a recovery meal, but again, to start, you want to avoid extra calories. Yogurt, for example, might seem like a 'chick' food but it is an important source of protein and vitamins so don't rule it out completely. You get serious protein for very few calories and it is a good post workout food to add. Other good choices are hummus and peanut butter. These both provide good fats that you need as well.

Portion control is also important. Won't do you a bit of good to eat healthily, but stuff yourself full five times per day. Get to know the calorie counts in your foods and get to know what a normal portion size is. To start, you won't want to go too far over the recommended amounts.

Avoid alcohol, soda (even the diet/reduced calorie soda), and fruit juice. These will all sabotage your efforts to reclaim your six pack. Water, coffee, tea are all good as long as you don't put sugar in them. If you must, use a small amount of real sugar to sweeten your drinks-the sugar in the cute little colored packages is no good for anyone.

Most of all, stick to it. You will notice results pretty quickly and soon you too will have visible six pack abs to show off on the beach.

Natural Home Remedies for Parasites that Infect the Intestines

Natural Home Remedies for Parasites that Infect the Intestines

There are four kinds of parasites

The intestines are sometimes infested by parasites, which trouble the patient. The most commonly noticed parasites in India are: threadworm, tapeworm, hookworm and the roundworm. They exist in the intestines because they find a congenial climate for their growth which again is the result of wrong type of feeding which most people indulges in. patients suffering from these worms generally acquire a voracious appetite, but in spite of massive quantities of food they take in, there is no gain the weight. Sometimes they are pale and sickly and, therefore, gloomy. Infants and young children are likely to be irritated all the time and are prone to throw tantrums at the slightest excuse.

The most common and the least harmful parasite infesting the intestines is the threadworm, or enterobius vermicularis. When they are expelled from the anus, they tend to create uncontrollable itch and the patient is forced to scratch his anus. They are small, thread like creatures, which can be noticed in the stools of children. The hookworm and the tapeworm reassemble earthworms: they are, fortunately, less common in our country than threadworms.

Causes

It is the dirty habits, like eating food without washing your hands, putting the finger first in the nostril then in the mouth, eating contaminated food, scratching the anus and then eating food without thoroughly washing your hands, using underwear worn by a person suffering from threadworms, constipation, and mucus in the stools, which encourage the parasites to infest the intestines.

Treatment

Traditional medicine depends on drugs to kill the parasites; they may give temporary relief, but that is more likely to harm the digestive processes and create other complications. Naturopathy, on the other hand, aims at strengthening the intestines so that they can purge themselves of the parasites. The stools of a child suspected to be suffering from threadworms could be examined visually: in some cases they would be found sticking to the anus of the child.

Treatment of threadworm-infested patient must start with cleanliness. A child suffering from it should be administered a warm water enema to which juice of half a fresh lime has been added. It should be followed by administration of about 50 to 100 militres of coconut oil with the help of a syringe through the anus. The child should be asked to strain himself at the time of passing the stools.

The best course would be to start the treatment with fasting: if the young patient or his mother cavils at it, he should be administered fruit juice or clear vegetables soup mixed with water. Lukewarm enema must be given during the treatment both in the morning and evening. Enema would help expel mucus and threadworms from the intestines. Bedclothes of the patient must be aired in the sun every day and he should stay in a well-ventilated room.

If the child is walking he should be encouraged to fast for two days followed by a diet of fruits and boiled vegetables for five to six days. Raw vegetables like carrot, cucumber and onions can be given in addition to tomatoes. Mil and cereals should be totally avoided. Potatoes roasted over the coals and raisins soaked in water could also be given. After that the patient could be allowed porridge or gruel. When he has started taking cereals, milk should not be given to him not lentils.

Cold compresses and mudpack applied from the navel to the pubes can also help in the initial stages of the treatment. Juice of garlic could also be taken recourse to since it kills the parasites without harming the patient.

This course of treatment could help in dealing with disease like the enlargement of a spleen, hepatitis low fever, goiter, mumps, discharge of pus from the ear and swollen eyes in children.

Health Diets - The BRAT, BRATT, BRATTY Diet for Gastrointestinal Problems

Health Diets - The BRAT, BRATT, BRATTY Diet for Gastrointestinal Problems

Sounding like a fad diet straight from Hollywood, this diet was actually developed to help with various types of gastrointestinal problems such as with gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Historically prescribed to patients with the above problems, this diet basically consists of bland foods that are low in fibre - the low fibre is recommended as foods high in fibre can cause excess gas and worsen the gastrointestinal problems.

Remember this diet was designed to suit specific stomach conditions and not as a weight loss program.

What does BRAT, BRATT or BRATTY mean?

BRAT is a acronym for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. BRATT is for bananas, rice, applesauce toast and tea. BRATTY stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, tea and yogurt. These are the foods recommended to prevent a increase in gastrointestinal problems and can in some cases cure them.

BANANAS
Eat a few bananas. Bananas are a bland fruit that can be constipating, a good thing for diarrhea.

RICE
Eat some rice. Rice is bland and well tolerated and likely to not cause nausea.

APPLESAUCE
Eat applesauce. The creamy consistency of applesauce goes down easily, and contains pectin which assists in the stopping of diarrhea.

TOAST
Eat a few slices of toast. Almost everyone likes toast, and with a bit of apple jelly, it adds needed calories for the patient.

TEA
Drink plenty of black tea to help with hydration.

YOGURT
Provides good cultures/bacteria that are lost during bouts of diarrhea and vomiting.

BRATT diet

It is recommended that all patients with gastroenteritis or diarrhea that are on the above diet increase their fluid intake regardless of age. Oral re-hydration solutions should be taken in conjunction with the extra fluids to prevent dehydration as severe diarrhea depletes a persons electrolytes which can cause a severe salt imbalance thus resulting in confusion, weakness, coma or even death. Avoid carbonated beverages, sugary or processed fruit drinks and gelatin based foods.

An important point to remember while on this diet is that it is not comprehensive and lacks in vital foods such as protein. So although the diet is helping with your intestinal problems the body still needs protein and it is recommended that you also consume some lean meat like turkey or indulge in some tofu. A good multi vitamin tablet taken daily, will also help at this time.

In these modern times this diet is no longer recommended by pediatricians, they recommend the child stays on its normal diet and the BRAT diet is given in addition to their normal tolerated foods. Studies have shown that a well balanced diet should be maintained while having diarrhea and by incorporating some of the BRAT foods like applesauce (due to its pectin) it can reduce the severity.

Medical attention is needed if the diarrhea is still severe after 3 or 4 days of being on the BRAT diet and if blood or mucus is present in the stool.

Weight Loss Without Diet Pills - The Natural Way to Lose Weight

Weight Loss Without Diet Pills - The Natural Way to Lose Weight

Before you rush to your local drug store, please check the following tips to know how you can lose weight without taking in diet pills.

Do the math - It takes about 3500 calories to make a pound. If you can slash 3500 calories from your diet or burn that much through exercise in just one week, all things even, you can achieve a one-pound weight loss in seven days. Diet pills can promise to do better than that of course, but still it is best to stick with safe and natural ways to shed off weight.

Burn more than you eat - 30 minutes of exercise can go a long way in burning energy in your body. A 30-minute low paced jogging, for example, can burn around 300 calories. 250 calories for working out on the jump rope for 15 minutes at moderate intensity. And the chances get higher as you increase the amount of time you exercise. If you can expend around 500 calories a day and remove a few hundred more from diet, you can be fit in no time. Given that you have enough willpower, of course.

Avoid bad foods and eat more of the good foods - Trans fat, sugars, refined flour, and saturated fats are things to avoid. Fresh fruits and vegetables, high-protein meats, and your favorite feel-good foods on the side are the things you should go for.

Rehydrate - Apart from helping the body's functions regulated, fluids can also flush out toxins, and wastes from your body. This process sets the cue for a much healthier you.

The process of losing weight was originally simple. But with the market for people who patronize quick weight loss schemes, pills, and supplements in great quantities were produced. The sad truth is, these weight loss diet pills can never replace comprehensive dieting and workout, regardless of what propriety blends or active ingredients they have. So let's just go back to basics, shall we? And lose weight the natural way.

The Diet Solution Program - A Glycemic Index Diet Plan?

The Diet Solution Program - A Glycemic Index Diet Plan?

In this article we review one of the best current low GI diet plans today: the popular Diet Solution Program (DSP). DSP is glowingly referred to as: "one of the most comprehensive books I've ever read and the closest thing to a nutrition bible which I've encountered," by weight loss expert John Davenport. We discuss differences with and similarities to widespread metabolic glycemic index (GI) diet plans. Due to the current obesity epidemic, these plans are becoming increasingly popular.

Isabel De Los Rios is creator of the Diet Solution Program. She has an academic degree in Exercise Physiology. Isabel is a well-known speaker on issues of nutrition and health. Her writing has been featured in numerous publications, and she manages her own health and wellness clinic in New Jersey.

As a weight loss coach, and having experienced huge victory with glycemic index diets, I'm regularly asked my opinion about other popular diets for contrast. In my own case, I've lost 35 pounds using a low GI diet plan and both identify with and am glad about the science behind this tactic.

Of these, we are most familiar with the Healthy for Life Program, pioneered by Dr. Ray Strand. Healthy for Life has been "field tested," with documented outcomes, under the rules of the Western Review Board of the FDA. Due to proven scientific results, Healthy for Life may be viewed as a benchmark.

DSP recognizes the fact that foods that abruptly "metabolize" into sugar are to be avoided. The DSP methodology is identical to low glycemic diet plans, including recommendations of certain foods to stay away from vs. those to prefer. This is identical to Healthy for Life and other glycemic index diet plans. For instance, the counsel in Jorge Cruise's "Belly Fat Cure" is also similar to DSP. The Belly Fat Cure teaches that the kind of calories are much more important that the amount eaten.

DSP incorporates comparable guidance for healthy vs. unhealthy fats and advice on which processed foodstuffs to stay away from for best results. And, DSP uses the same calorie counting advice, often heard in most glycemic index diet plans, which is: "You don't need to count calories."

All in all, the Diet Solution Program uses a similar strategy to what we've been aware of in quite a lot of other glycemic index diet plans. They seem to have recognized the benefits for their methodology, based on experience vs. science. This is of little import, however, since outcomes are what matter. Finally, DSP goes beyond common glycemic index diet plans, by using metabolic typing to provide specific individualized recommendations. This makes DSP different from otherwise similar glycemic index diet plans, because of the fact that it features an tailored approach.

We conclude that DSP is very similar to other low glycemic diets but incorporates added features that may appeal to some. We invite you to bookmark this page and provide feedback or comments, whether you decide to try the DSP or you have experience with other similar plans.

How Much Should I Feed My Bearded Dragon?

How Much Should I Feed My Bearded Dragon?

There is often a lot of confusion about what a bearded dragon should eat and how much. These reptiles have very particular needs in their dietary requirements. Depending on their age and stage of development they can rightly be described a being mainly carnivorous, or mainly vegetarian which can be confusing for some people.

A growing bearded dragon (that is, sub adult) needs a diet that's mainly made up of livefood so that it gets the massive amounts of protein that it needs to sustain its rapid rate of growth. Once an adult, more than 20% of livefood in its diet will overload its organs and lead to an unhealthy and shortened life.

Making this more difficult, it seems each member of this species grows at a different rate, taking between a year (or sometimes even less) to 18 months to reach full adult size, so it is impossible to say at 12 months, for example, a bearded dragon should be eating this much food of this type.

The main rule to follow is that from hatchling through the juvenile stage it is almost impossible to overfeed. Feeding should start to be reduced as the sub adult stage is reached, and then reduced to a maintenance level as it reaches adult weight. There is much variation in adult weight which adds to the confusion. A healthy adult bearded dragon can be anything from 400 to 700 grams, with around the 500 gram mark being average. Females, on average, weigh less than males. Their size as adults depend on a number of factors including the nutrition they've had whilst growing, and their genetic makeup.

Points to Remember

You should not adopt a young bearded dragon until it is at least six weeks of age. Moving to a new home causes stress, and may put them off eating for up to two weeks. If they are younger than six weeks when moved they probably won't have built up enough fat reserves to see them through any period of stress.

Never feed anything which is larger than the gap between their eyes. As they grow the size of the food offered should be increased but still follow this rule. Bearded dragons lose interest in smaller insects as they grow so increase the size of livefood as well as the size of chopped vegetables as the latter helps develop healthy teeth.

Always keep a bowl of chopped vegetables and fruit in the vivarium with a juvenile or sub adult, even if they show no sign of interest in it. When adult they will be mainly vegetarian, so should have every opportunity to try different foods. They seem to have quite individual tastes, so try a variety of vegetables and fruit to see what yours likes. Quite often they will eat little bits even if you think the food has been untouched.

What You Should Feed by Age and Size

From six to twelve weeks you should be feeding three feeds a day of as much livefood as he can eat in 10 minutes each time. Try not to leave any crickets in the vivarium overnight as they have been known to nip the soft parts of baby beardies quite badly, and at the very least cause them stress. If you leave a bowl of vegetables in overnight, any crickets you have missed should eat this, and not your pet.

It's useful if you can feed your bearded dragon outside the vivarium in a plastic tub or washing up bowl - that way you can see how much he's eaten, and you cn be sure there are no crickets left in the vivarium.

At twelve weeks reduce to two feeds per day, again consisting of how many can be eaten in 10 minutes.

I'm often asked questions such as 'my bearded dragon eats 20 crickets a day - is this enough?' which is impossible to answer! The best and really only way to know if you are feeding your juvenile correctly is to weigh him each week, and make sure there is a steady weight gain.

When your bearded dragon is around six to nine months old, and weighing between 250 to 300 grams reduce to one feed per day. He should be looking plumpish by this stage, with a good fat reserve at the base of his tail.

Adult Bearded Dragons

It is dangerous to continue feeding an adult livefood every day, as his metabolism will not be able to cope with all the protein. Adults should be fed livefood only two or three times a week, and fresh vegetables and fruit should be given daily. An adult should be on a maintenance diet which enables him to maintain his weight, he should not increase his weight once fully grown.

Calcium and Vitamins

As they grow so rapidly and as they are kept with artificial light, a sub adult bearded dragon cannot absorb sufficient calcium to support his rate of growth. Additional calcium must be given daily to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) which causes deformity of the limbs, and which, untreated or not caught early enough, can be fatal. One feed per day should be dusted with calcium powder, and vitamin supplements should be given twice a week. It's possible to buy a combined calcium/vitamin supplement that can be given daily. Once adult, calcium supplements should be given weekly.

Environmental Effects on Food Digestion

No matter how well you feed your bearded dragon, if you have not set up the vivarium correctly he will not be able to digest his food properly and obtain the nutrients from it. They need a basking temperature of around 105 degrees Fahrenheit together with a strong (preferably 12%) UVB light.

What type of Livefood to Feed?

Youngsters should be fed crickets or locusts. Crickets are recommended due simply to the copious amounts they eat as they are cheaper. If you introduce locusts too early you may end up with an expensive fussy beardie. Locusts or roaches are a good food for an adult bearded dragon. Never feed a diet of meal worms - the chitin in their skin makes them hard to digest. Meal worms and wax worms can be fed as an occasional treat.

These reptiles do not need to eat pinkies. Until they are adult these will be to big for them, and once adult they do not need the extra protein unless they are undernorished (for example, one that has been neglected). They can be given to a female in between laying clutches of eggs as this is the time she will need extra protein.

Bearded dragons are living longer in captivity as we understand more about their needs and how to look after them properly. Feeding the right foods and the right amount will help your pet have a long and happy life.

Nutrition and Your Autistic Child

Nutrition and Your Autistic Child

It seems like common sense that a well nourished child is a happier child. Many parents have noticed moody or cranky behavior in their young children before meal time or after school when they arrive home hungry. For an Autistic child, however, who may not be able to accurately communicate his or her needs, this hunger may go unnoticed. Or they may not want to eat and may have many food aversions. For these reasons, integrating nutrition therapy into treatment for children with autism is critical.

In many cases, nutrition is not an integral part of overall therapy at diagnosis. Yet many parents who eventually seek out this information on their own, are getting nutrition information from questionable sources. Some parents may not take nutrition therapy into consideration at all.

Autism is complex and involves a spectrum of challenging behaviors, so it is natural for both parents and caregivers to initially focus directly on controlling those behaviors. In many cases, the health care team includes a physician, occupational therapist, speech therapist and behavior therapist; but does not include a registered dietitian to provide nutrition therapy. What is interesting is that almost all autistic children have nutritional deficiencies, food intolerance, or gastrointestinal disorders that often are not thoroughly addressed. While studies involving the significance of the effect nutrition status has in the management of autism are preliminary, there is good reason to consider filling this gap in treatment.

The goal of nutrition therapy in autism is to support the structure and function of the child's brain and body to perform at their optimal level and to maximize the child's brain function so that the response to other treatment is enhanced. Proper nutrition therapy should include a comprehensive nutrition assessment and also address feeding problems, any gastrointestinal problems, or need for vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Imagine a child who has difficulty communicating his or her needs, feeling uncomfortable every time he eats due to unknown food sensitivities or intolerance. This sends a negative message to avoid those foods or avoid eating all together. Children with food allergies are at higher risk for nutrition-related problems and decreased growth, but children with autism are more negatively affected due to their problems with sensory integration dysfunction.

Allergy symptoms may include hives, coughing, eczema, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gastrointestinal reflux, watery eyes, nasal congestion or sneezing. To determine which foods are problematic, an "Elimination/Challenge Diet" is applied. Once problem foods are removed from the diet, the discomfort is resolved, and the child becomes more open to mealtime. A well-nourished child is a better-behaved child. In many cases, children who undergo nutrition assessment and treatment, have a formed bowel movement for the first time in his or her life. Imagine how eliminating this discomfort helps a child!

Many autistic children may also have a subclinical nutrition deficiency. This is a deficiency of a particular vitamin, mineral, or essential fatty acid that is not severe enough to produce a classic deficiency symptom, but rather has more global, subtle effects that result in loss of optimal health and impairment of body processes. These subclinical deficiencies can cause irritability, poor concentration, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances or loss of appetite. While it is best to determine which vitamin or mineral the child may be deficient in, minimally a standard multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is recommended. Look for supplements that have the USP label on them, and those that are free of colors, allergens or artificial flavors to eliminate any possible food intolerance issues. Using liquid forms that can be mixed into favorite foods (such as applesauce, yogurt, juices, or sherbet) is one strategy for children who have difficulty chewing or swallowing vitamins. Asking a pharmacist to compound a multivitamin and mineral supplement that is age appropriate is another option.

In addition to the multivitamin/mineral, omego-3 fatty acids have been shown to be helpful as well. Numerous studies indicate that Omega-3 fatty acids are deficient in those who have ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism may account for many features common in these conditions. There is some preliminary evidence that it is also deficient in children with autism. For children ages seven and older, 650 milligrams per day of an Omega-3 that provides both EPA and DHA is recommended. For children four to six years of age, 540 milligrams per day is recommended, and for children aged one to three, 390 milligrams per day is needed.

Much more research is needed in the area of nutrition and autism, but clearly nutrition is a key piece of the treatment puzzle that is often missing. Speak with your health care team about a thorough nutrition assessment for your autistic child.

How To Raise White Worms For The Aquarium

How To Raise White Worms For The Aquarium

Every successful breeder of tropical fish knows that feeding live foods to their charges is one of the best ways to maintain healthy and active fish.

Live foods are overall high in protein. They stimulate spawning, and help to intensify coloration. Live foods enhance the natural tendencies of fish to forage for their food as they would in their natural environment.

White worms (Enchytraeus albidus) are a great source of food for the aquarium. They are about 70% protein, 14.5% fats, and approximately 10% carbohydrate. The white worm in size is approximately 3/4" to 1 1/2", somewhere between Tubifex and Grindal worms. Fish love them, and they are appropriate for a large variety of carnivore fish, even the smaller cichlids.

Nick Lockhart, breeder for King Discus [http://www.kingdiscus.com] feeds white worms twice weekly to our breeding discus and juveniles. His goal is to provide a wide variety of food to keep the fish interested and feeding to stimulate breeding.

White worms are easy to raise. A plastic shoebox from the dollar store will meet the needs of most aquarists. As worms need to breathe, the container shouldn't be air tight. Cutting a small hole in the lid and placing a piece of breathable foam in the hole will suffice to allow enough oxygen to reach the worms.

Fill the container about 3/4 full with peat moss as the medium. The peat moss should be wet, but not soaked. Test by squeezing a bit of the medium in your hand. If a few drops emerge, then you have it right. If water emerges from the mass in a stream, you have it too wet.

Add your starter culture of worms. Finding a suitable starter culture can at times be difficult. A good source can be from auctions at local fish clubs, or from a fellow enthusiast. Also, looking in the classified in the back pages of magazines like Aquarium Fish Magazine or Aquarium USA can sometimes lead to a good resource.

Place a piece of wet crustless white bread on top of the medium for compost. Cover this with a sheet of plastic the size of the slice of bread. The plastic aids in keeping the bread from drying out. It is a good idea to bury the piece of bread in the medium when first starting a culture to prevent mold from occurring. Allow the worms a week to establish before feeding them. Check on them on a daily basis to insure that they are eating the bread.

White worms will need to be housed in a cool dark place, free from insects. We use an apartment sized refrigerator with a temperature control sensor that maintains the temperature at 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of the best foods for white worms is Gerber's Baby Oatmeal. Add a pinch of active dry yeast to the mixture. The trick is to feed the worms enough to insure they thrive, but not so much that it will begin to mold. A good rule of thumb is to feed only what they will consume in three days. A little trial and error work is needed here. If mold occurs, simply spoon it out of the medium, and replace the food, using less the next time.

White worm cultures will "crash" if the population becomes too large. This can be noted by the worms attempting to crawl up the sides of the container. Simply dump the medium onto a sheet of newspaper, separate the medium into two parts, and you have another culture to fall back on if the first crashes. Get another shoebox, top to 3/4 full with dampened peat moss, and you have the insurance of a supply of white worms.

To harvest white worms, simply wait until a nice clump of them are underneath the sheet of plastic, pluck them out with tweezers or your fingers, and clean appropriately before feeding to your fish. rinsing with dechlorinated water, by pouring from one container to another will do the trick, removing any soil or left over food. You can then feed the worms to your fishes.

The biggest thing to remember about growing white worms is to never let the medium dry out. It is also a good idea to have two cultures growing at the same time, in case one of the cultures "crashes." Keep an eye out for mold, feed the worms appropriately, and you will have happy, vigorous fish!
