Diet For Gestational Diabetes - Good Nutrition For Pregnant Mommies

Nutrition is very important during pregnancy especially for those who develop gestational diabetes. Diabetes diet for gestational diabetes must be followed to help both the mother and the baby. The diabetes develops when the body can't efficiently produce or use insulin. Insulin is the hormone made by the pancreas that allows cells to turn sugar in the blood into useable fuel that we will be needing to work properly. If a large amount of glucose accumulate in the blood, it means that the cell are not getting the fuel or the energy that they need. High blood sugar can be a harmful both for mother and baby. Controlling it is very important.

One way to keep the blood sugar level under control is to follow the diet for gestational diabetes. It is recommended to seek consultation to a registered dietitian that can provide you the diet plan that is best for you, based on your weight, height, physical activity, and the needs of the growing baby as well as the level of glucose intolerance.

Eat a variety of foods, distribute the calories and carbohydrates evenly throughout the day. Make sure that the meal and snacks are balanced. Do not skip your meal, be consistent about the time you eat the food and the amount you eat. The blood sugar will remain stable when the foods are distributed throughout the day and consistently from day to day. Eat a good breakfast, the blood glucose levels are most likely to be out of whack in the morning. To keep the level in healthy range, you may have to limit the carbohydrates like breads,cereal, fruits and milk. Boost the intake of protein intake and avoid fruit and juice altogether. Include the high fiber foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals and dried peas, beans and legumes. These foods are broken down and absorbed more slowly than simple carbohydrates, which may help to keep the blood sugar from going to high after meals. Limit the intake of foods and beverages that contains simple sugars such as soda, fruit juice, flavored teas, most desserts- or avoid them altogether. These foods can easily elevate the blood sugar. Milk is high in lactose, which is a simple sugar, so if a pregnant women will drink more than 2 or 3 glasses a day, you may need to limit the amount you drink and find an alternative source of calcium. Try to drink some other beverage like club soda with a squeeze of lemon or orange, or unsweetened iced tea.

A low gestational diabetes diet is one that includes glycemic index, carbohydrates, without skimping on the vital nutrients required for the growing baby. Here is a sample of diet for gestational diabetes.

For breakfast
cup of a high fiber low G.I cereal, such as untoasted muesli, bran, or rolled oats with low fat milk.
Morning tea
1 slice of toast with reduced fat cheese
1 serve of fruit
Lunch
2 slice of bread or 2/3 cup cooked rice or 1 cup cooked pasted with fish or lean meat
salad vegetables
1 serve of fruit
Afternoon tea
1 cup low fat milk or 100g low fat yogurt
1 slice of fruit loaf or 1 crumpet
Dinner
-2/3 cup cooked rice or 1 cup cooked pasta
-1 serve of fruit

It is very important to provide a a good diet for gestational diabetes to become healthy both the mother and the baby.
