Acid reflux disease or Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease that happens when stomach contents pass through the overrelaxed lower esophageal sphincter and irritate the esophageal lining. This kind of disease, which left untreated, can lead to some forms of cancer. So, since acid reflux is like other diseases which can be triggered by eating certain foods, what are the safe foods for acid reflux and which should be avoided?
Basically, one should avoid foods that are highly acidic and those high in fat because they are hard to be digested, causing the digestive system to work harder and produce too much acids.
The food you should avoid include chocolates, caffeine, fatty food, citrus, high fat meat, cream, butter and oil, desserts and baked goods high in fat, tomato-based products, spices like onion and chili, dairy products like sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cottage cheese, junk food and alcohol.
On the other hand, you should be eating steamed vegetables, low fat fat meat, and light baked goods low in fat. Apples and food high in complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread and pasta can also be good.
Other things you can do include eating in small amounts, sitting in upright position and chewing your food well to avoid getting your digestive system to worked up digesting what you ate. You should have a food diary with you because it helps to let you know the ones which had caused another attack in case you suffered from one.
So, if you want to know more acid reflux foods to avoid, just ask a doctor, a nutritionist or a dietitian.
