Marketed as "natural" weight-loss supplements, herbal diet pills have given hope and failed promises to consumers and researchers alike. On one hand, much of what is heard about these pills is focused on how quick they could help one lose weight which is, of course, a very enticing prospect. While on the other, people rage on about the side effects of the said weight loss products.
There are various types of herbal diet pills; they come in all shapes and sizes, so to speak. Each type has its own active ingredient which suggests how the pill works. So how do herbal diet pills really work?
The effect of a certain pill on one's body actually depends on various factors - one being the active ingredient it contains.
Most herbal diet pills rely on diet suppressant properties that limit hunger pangs a consumer experiences. The logic here is simple: if one does not feel hungry, he is less likely to snack. These products influence the region of the brain called the hypothalamus which regulates appetite by way of blocking the rise of brain chemicals norepinephrine and serotonin. These chemicals are responsible for giving a "full" sensation.
There are also the fat blockers which suppress the action of an enzyme called lipase - an enzyme that causes the breakdown of fats in the digestive system. Without this, the body will not be able to process fats, thus it will be flushed away from the system.
Other herbal diet pills make use of the principle called thermogenesis which is basically the expenditure of energy reserves in the body.
The huge problem with these products is that most of them claim too-good-to-be-true results, which are hardly deliverable and that proper governing bodies do not approve them. Thus, many consumers are dissatisfied with the products. Others cause severe side effects, serious enough to get them banned by the FDA. It is, therefore, recommended for consumers to first research on how exactly a certain herbal diet pill works because the quality of most of these products are dubious at best.
