Earthworm Farming

Earthworm Farming

Worm farming as a Business - explained.

Worm farming is simply the controlled breeding of worms to get three products that become saleable, the first being the worms themselves, the second product is the worm tea. This is liquid compost that is drained off of the farm itself and finally the last product of the worm castings or more normal compost.

The demand for all three of these items has grown to the point where it is now a multimillion dollar business.

Worms in a worm farm digest leaves, some human waste products, fruits, animal droppings and a bunch of other scraps. These waste products are digested by the worms and become very sought out products that are high in demand. The demand is simply because this compost or vermicompost is so high in nutrients and other good properties that it is used to recondition leached soils and other areas.

The worm castings, or worm droppings, are the main recycled ingredient in the healthy compost that you get from this recycling farming system.

Running a worm farm from a medium sized area allows you control of things like the drainage and temperature.

Both these factors are critical to the financial success of the business. You could have thermostatically controlled incubators that would allow you to keep production at its highest levels all year round. Ph levels, moisture, oxygen and temperature are all easily controlled with this system.

However if you want to get the farm running on an extremely large scale it is still very profitable.

The difference of scale here does change some of the factors and causes you to lose control of some important things.

What you would do is run the farm using trenches and mounds. You would initially simply dig trenches and aerate the soil to allow movement for the worms. Naturally you would put all the correct layers into the trenches as you go along.

Having access to a lot of recyclable waste would be an added benefit.

You would lose some of your worms to the surrounding land, but the very nature of the size of your business would not be badly affected. Here you would have to watch factors like moisture and temperature, as these are not that easy to control in an outside environment.

Depending upon the capital that you have available to begin with, you could build table mounted bins from wood that could still allow large scale farming.

Whatever the size farm that you wish to have the basic rules all work the same, and those fundamental items are something that you should be sure that you have all the correct facts from the very beginning.
